Nixon business brokers and M&A advisors

A plantation settlement, branding codes and a poultry plant

Robert T. Nixon founded the R.T. Nixon Plantation in northern Gonzales County in 1852, and the settlement later took its name from the family's holdings. Cattle and horse breeding dominated the early economy, and the area is known for open-range branding codes dating from 1866. In 1906 the Galveston, Harrisburg and San Antonio Railroad came through, and many residents moved to the new railroad town. The 2020 census counted 2,341 people. Most of the city lies in Gonzales County, and the part in Wilson County belongs to the San Antonio metropolitan area.

The major employers today are Holmes Foods, which runs a chicken processing plant, Blue Dolphin Energy Company, which operates an oil refinery, and the Nixon-Smiley school district.

Supplying the plant and the refinery

In a town with two large industrial employers, companies around it can earn much of their living serving them: maintenance and fabrication shops, trucking and hauling, equipment and parts suppliers, electrical and mechanical contractors. For any of those, a buyer's first question will be what share of revenue rests on those one or two customers, and whether those relationships would last under a new owner.

The answer does not have to hurt the price. We document how long you have served each customer, how the work is contracted and priced, and which of your people manage the relationship day to day. If you also serve farms, ranches or other companies across the three counties, we show that spread too. Buyers of machine and fabrication shops look at equipment and skills as closely as earnings, which our manufacturing page explains.

A company of the right size, roughly $3 million or more in yearly revenue and profitable, can draw buyers from San Antonio and well beyond. Buyers of that kind usually ask to meet the employees who run the work, so we plan that step with you. Our San Antonio page and the South Texas page describe that market.

Questions owners in Nixon ask

My Nixon company does most of its work for the poultry plant. Can I still sell it?

Yes, but plan for the buyer to focus on that relationship. They will want contract history, the renewal record and evidence that the plant values your service rather than just your personal involvement. Some buyers will propose tying part of the price to that customer staying, and we negotiate those terms carefully.

Will buyers travel to a small town like Nixon to look at my company?

Qualified buyers go where the earnings are. We send them a confidential package and an HD video first, so the ones who visit are already serious. Early meetings can take place off site, so employees and customers in a small community are not alarmed.
