Cuero business brokers and M&A advisors

MDR & Associates helps DeWitt County owners sell a business in Cuero to buyers who have already shown they can pay. Cuero sits near the mouth of Sandies Creek on the Guadalupe River, where U.S. Routes 87, 77 Alternate and 183 meet, 28 miles from Victoria, and we come to you there.

Hides, the Chisholm Trail and turkey ranching

Gustav Schleicher laid out the town as a way station in 1872, and it was officially founded in 1873. The name is the Spanish word for hide, a nod to the leather trade that briefly flourished here. Cuero was a stop on the Chisholm Trail for cattle headed to Kansas, and it grew in the 1870s and 1880s when families left Indianola after hurricanes destroyed that coastal town. Turkey ranching carried the local economy through much of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Agriculture remains the primary industry, and the area is one of the top cattle producers and shippers in Texas. Cuero is the DeWitt County seat, and the 2020 census counted 8,128 people. Yoakum is 16 miles away and Gonzales 32.

Selling a company that serves farms and ranches

Feed and supply dealers, livestock haulers, equipment sellers and repair shops in cattle country share one feature buyers notice: revenue follows the seasons and the cattle market. That is not a problem when three years of records show the pattern repeating. It becomes one when the books are mixed with personal ranch expenses, so the recast, which rebuilds earnings as a new owner would see them, is where we spend time first. Buyers of supply businesses value inventory turns and supplier terms; our distribution page explains how.

Buyers for these companies range from larger regional dealers adding a location to individuals who want to own a business in a county seat, and some will ask to use SBA financing, which we can arrange. Most sales run three to nine months from signing an engagement letter to money wired, though the quickest has taken eight days and the longest eighteen months. The pace depends mostly on how ready the records are.

Questions owners in Cuero ask

I run my Cuero company and my ranch together. Can the business be sold on its own?

Usually, yes. We separate the company's income and costs from the ranch's so a buyer sees what the business earns by itself. Shared land, equipment or buildings can be leased to the buyer or sold separately, and your CPA and attorney help you choose between them.

Do buyers worry that a DeWitt County company depends on the cattle market?

They ask about it. What reassures them is a record of steady earnings through good and poor years, a customer base spread across many operations, and products or services that ranchers need regardless of prices. We show those points plainly in the marketing package.
