Abernathy business brokers and M&A advisors

Abernathy owners who are thinking about selling can call on MDR & Associates as business brokers who represent the seller only. The town straddles the Hale–Lubbock county line on the Llano Estacado, and we make the drive to the South Plains for every meeting.

A 1909 railroad town on the Llano Estacado

Abernathy was created by the Santa Fe Railroad. Governor T.M. Campbell recognized the survey of the townsite on June 18, 1909, the site was platted on July 8 and named for M.C. Abernathy, and the first train arrived that fall. The town waited until 1924 to incorporate. A Plains Grain Company elevator beside the tracks is a reminder of how closely the town grew up with the railroad and the farms it served.

Most of Abernathy lies in Hale County, where it belongs to the Plainview micropolitan area; about a quarter of the city reaches south into Lubbock County and the Lubbock metropolitan area. It sits 3,360 feet up on the High Plains and had 2,865 residents at the 2020 census.

Finding the right buyer for a South Plains company

A company here with $3 million or more in revenue almost always works a wide territory: farms and gins across several counties, contractors in Lubbock, customers in Plainview and beyond. That reach is the selling point, and buyers will test it. They ask how long the largest accounts have been with you, how much of the work comes back every year, and whether equipment and trucks are in shape for the next owner. Grain handling, farm supply and parts businesses belong in our distribution practice, where inventory, supplier terms and route coverage drive price.

A second worry for owners in a small town is who will keep the doors open. Many buyers want the existing team to stay, and a written plan for the handover, including who takes over customer relationships, helps them say yes. We start that conversation early, well before the first buyer sees the company.

The wider West and North Texas market has a page of its own. Our headquarters is in Frisco, and one of the firm's principals is present whenever price and terms are negotiated. Under our ten-step process, the first meeting is free and confidential, buyers must sign an NDA before seeing anything that identifies you, and no fee is due unless the company actually sells.

Questions owners in Abernathy ask

Are there buyers for a company headquartered in Abernathy?

If it earns a steady profit and does not depend entirely on you, yes. Buyers care about customers, margins and people more than population. Being close to Lubbock helps, because many acquirers and managers can reach Abernathy easily. We market the company to qualified buyers across Texas and the country, not only to people nearby.

My Abernathy company is tied to the farm economy. Do bad crop years hurt its value?

Buyers expect some swings in an agricultural market and look at several years together. What helps is showing how the company kept its margins and customers through weaker seasons. We present three years of results, explain one-time events and make the case for the earnings a buyer can rely on going forward.
