Tulia business brokers and M&A advisors

Tulia is the Swisher County seat, a farming and agribusiness center 46 miles south of Amarillo where U.S. Route 87 meets State Highway 86, just east of Interstate 27. MDR & Associates advises Texas owners who want to sell, acting as their M&A advisor from the first valuation to the closing table, and if your company is here, our advisors will come to Tulia to meet you.

A Panhandle farm town built around the railroad

A post office opened in 1887, and the Santa Fe railroad extension arrived in December 1906. Tulia grew as a center for farming and agribusiness, and it still fills that role for the surrounding county today. By the mid-1980s its plants made clothing and farm implements, and four large cattle-feeding operations were nearby. The 2020 census counted 4,473 residents, down from 4,967 in 2010.

The weather has always been part of business here. The town sits at 3,484 feet with a semiarid climate, and it recorded minus 23 degrees during the Great Blizzard of 1899. Companies that serve farms and feeders learn to plan around seasons, dry years and commodity prices, and buyers want to see that they have.

Finding a buyer for a Swisher County company

With fewer residents than in 2010, the buyer for a Tulia company is unlikely to be a neighbor. More often it is a larger agribusiness supplier, an equipment dealer or distributor expanding its territory along I-27, a private equity group or an individual who wants to own a working business in a small town. We contact qualified buyers in our own database first and screen each for funding before they learn anything specific.

Companies that sell and deliver feed, seed, parts or equipment are, to a buyer, distribution businesses, and our distribution page explains how buyers value them: inventory turns, supplier agreements, delivery routes and customer loyalty. Our process page shows how that evaluation becomes a marketing package, an HD video and, in time, competing letters of intent.

When a qualified buyer needs help closing the gap, we can arrange seller financing or an SBA-backed structure, which widens the field for a small-town company. The West & North Texas page covers the rest of our work across the Panhandle and the plains.

Questions owners in Tulia ask

Does a dry year hurt the price of a Tulia agribusiness company?

It can if the year stands alone. Buyers look at several years together, so we present results across good and bad seasons and explain what drove each. A company that stayed profitable through a dry year often earns more trust from a buyer than one that only shows its best numbers.

Can I sell my Tulia company and keep the land or the building?

Yes. Many owners sell the business and lease the real estate to the buyer, which creates ongoing rent. Others sell both together. The choice affects price, taxes and your income after the sale, so we work through the options with your CPA and attorney before the company goes to market.
