Sweeny business brokers and M&A advisors
Owners who want to sell a business in Sweeny can count on MDR & Associates to act for them alone, from the first valuation to closing. Sweeny is the westernmost incorporated town in Brazoria County, 20 miles southwest of Angleton, and its economy grew around the refinery and petrochemical complex that Phillips Petroleum developed. We come to Sweeny for every meeting, held at your business or any spot you pick.
Carbon black, Phillips and ConocoPhillips: Sweeny's industrial story
John Sweeny settled here in 1833, and the railroad reached the spot, then called Adamston, in 1905. Oil was discovered at nearby Old Ocean in 1934, and in 1942 the government built a carbon black plant. Phillips Petroleum went on to develop a refinery, a natural gas liquids center and a petrochemical complex, which became part of ConocoPhillips when Phillips merged with Conoco in 2000. The town incorporated in 1945 and counted 3,626 residents in the 2020 census.
Sweeny sits on Farm to Market Roads 1459 and 524, about 20 miles from the Gulf, with the San Bernard River a mile east and both Missouri Pacific and Union Pacific tracks passing through. If your company keeps that complex running, through maintenance, fabrication, equipment rental, trucking or supply, our manufacturing page explains how industrial buyers value that kind of work.

Keeping crews in place through a sale in a small refinery town
In a town of a few thousand people, a skilled crew is hard to replace, and news travels quickly. Buyers know both facts. They will want to see that your supervisors and technicians plan to stay, and they will want the sale kept quiet until it is certain. We handle the second part with a blind profile and NDAs, and the first with retention plans worked out between you and the buyer, such as bonuses or new agreements for key people that take effect at closing.
How we work with Sweeny owners
Our first sit-down with you is free and private, and a value range follows once we have gone through three years of your books. From there we prepare the marketing package, contact qualified buyers, and negotiate the competing offers, always with a principal of the firm at your side. Buyers across the Houston area and beyond are approached through our own database before any blind listing on the major marketplaces. The Houston page describes the wider metro, and our fees are paid only if the company sells.

Questions owners in Sweeny ask
Will buyers worry that my Sweeny company depends on one refinery complex?
They will ask about it, and they will want written service agreements, safety records and years of billing history. Dependence on a long-standing, large customer is not a deal breaker. We present that history clearly and bring several buyers into the process so no single one can use the concentration to push the price down.
Should I tell my refinery customer that I plan to sell my Sweeny company?
Not at the start. Owners usually tell key customers once a buyer has been chosen and the deal is close, often with the buyer present. Some service agreements require consent to an assignment, so your attorney should review them early. We plan the timing with you so the customer hears the news in a way that protects the relationship.
