Huntsville business brokers and M&A advisors

Huntsville is the Walker County seat on Interstate 45, about 70 miles north of Houston, and the home of the state prison system and Sam Houston State University. For owners there, MDR & Associates is the business broker that sells companies on the seller's behalf, with advisors who travel from Frisco to meet you.

A state agency headquarters and a university town

Huntsville began around 1836 as a trading post set up by Pleasant and Ephraim Gray, who named it after Huntsville, Alabama, and it later became the home of Sam Houston. The 2020 census counted 45,941 residents. The city sits in the East Texas Piney Woods, where Interstate 45 meets U.S. 190 and State Highways 19, 30 and 75, and it anchors a micropolitan area of its own within the Houston-Galveston combined region.

The Texas Department of Criminal Justice dominates employment, with 6,744 workers in 2022, and it is the only major state agency headquartered outside Austin. Five prison units operate within city limits: Byrd, Goree, Huntsville, Wynne and Holliday. Sam Houston State University, founded in 1879, employs 2,417, followed by the school district with 980, Huntsville Memorial Hospital with 552 and Walmart with 485.

Serving the state, the university or the town: what that means at sale time

An economy built on a state agency and a university can create demand for food service, maintenance, transport, uniforms, printing, staffing, technology and professional services, and for home services for the people who work there. A company with recurring institutional revenue can be attractive to buyers, provided the contracts are documented and can pass to a new owner. A company that sells to both the institutions and the private market is the easiest kind to present.

We start by reviewing three years of financials and giving you a range of value at no cost. Before marketing, we work with your attorney on contract assignment and with your CPA on the recast, so buyers see clean numbers and clear terms. If a buyer's diligence turns up a contract that cannot be assigned, the price can fall late in the deal, which is exactly what early review prevents. Then we approach qualified buyers under confidentiality and seek several offers at once. Our business services page explains how service companies are valued, a valuation snapshot gives a quick first range, and our Houston page covers the metro to the south.

Questions owners in Huntsville ask

Do buyers treat revenue from TDCJ or Sam Houston State as a strength or a risk?

Both. Public institutions tend to pay reliably and renew, which buyers like, but one large contract can also be lost at rebid. Buyers will want contract dates, renewal history and the share of revenue at stake. Showing a spread of institutional and private customers usually earns the strongest offers.

Can a Huntsville company attract buyers from outside Walker County?

Yes. Huntsville is on Interstate 45 about 70 miles from Houston, which puts it within easy reach for buyers in the metro, and our outreach covers individual buyers and private equity groups across Texas. What draws them is profit, clean records and a team that will stay, not the address.
