Timber, lignite and gas in the Trinity River watershed
The railroad came through Crockett in 1872 and let the town put the county's timber to work; by 1885 it had 1,200 residents. Lignite mining began in 1904 and peaked around 1910. More recently, renewed interest in natural gas reserves has brought new energy infrastructure, and new retail space has gone up along Loop 304. The land is hilly and forested with loblolly pine and pecan, and the 2020 census counted 6,332 people. The highways reach in every direction: 35 miles to Palestine, 46 to Corrigan, 48 to Huntsville and 54 to Nacogdoches.
