Railroad, oil and farmland around the county seat
The town was founded in 1886 when the San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railway extended into San Patricio County, and it was named for David Sinton, a major shareholder in the Coleman-Fulton Pasture Company. Farming came first, with vegetables and later sorghum, cotton and corn, while cattle ranching filled the surrounding countryside.
A turning point came in 1935 with the discovery of oil near town. The Plymouth Oil Company set up its headquarters in Sinton, bringing jobs, and its semiprofessional team, the Plymouth Oilers, won the National Baseball Congress national championship in 1951. The town also had a Rural Electrification Administration office and a Dr Pepper bottling plant. The 2020 census counted 5,504 residents.
