Lasater's ranch town and what it grew into
Edward Cunningham Lasater started a cattle ranch here in 1895, and when the railroad arrived in 1904 he laid out the town and sold much of his ranch land to farmers. He opened a creamery in 1909, and Brooks County was created in 1911 with Falfurrias as its seat. Truck farming and citrus followed in the 1920s, and oil and gas reserves came into play in the 1930s and 1940s.
Today the largest single industry is the Border Patrol interior checkpoint on US 281 south of town, first opened in 1940 and enlarged in 2019. The town counted 4,609 people in 2020. It lies about 78 miles from Corpus Christi, 36 miles south of Alice and 67 miles north of Edinburg.
