McAllen business brokers and M&A advisors

Owners across Hidalgo County who plan to sell a company in McAllen can work with MDR & Associates, a firm that represents only sellers and is paid only at closing. McAllen anchors the McAllen–Edinburg–Mission metropolitan area, with city limits reaching south to the Rio Grande just north of Reynosa, and our advisors meet owners there in person.

From citrus fields to trade, health care and retail

McAllen was founded on December 5, 1904, when the railroad reached the Santa Anita Ranch. By 1911 some 5,000 acres in East McAllen were planted with cotton, alfalfa, broom corn, citrus fruits, grapes and figs. A suspension bridge built in 1941 increased the tourist trade, and the discovery of oil near Reynosa in 1947 drew new residents. The 2020 census counted 142,210 people.

Since then, the center of the economy has moved from agriculture to international trade, health care, retail and tourism. The maquiladora economy and the North American Free Trade Agreement increased cross-border trade with Mexico, and the McAllen Foreign-Trade Zone, commissioned in 1973, was the first inland foreign-trade zone in the United States.

When customers cross the river to buy

Many McAllen businesses serve customers on both sides of the river, whether as distributors, retailers, service providers or health care practices. Buyers will want to know how much revenue depends on shoppers or clients from Mexico, how exposed margins are to changes in exchange rates and crossings, and whether the company has grown steadily through those changes. Retailers should be ready to show sales by month across several years, because shopper traffic can shift. A distributor using the foreign-trade zone should be ready to explain how that affects duties and cash flow. Our distribution page covers what buyers of wholesale companies examine.

Service companies with recurring contracts, such as medical billing, staffing, facility services or insurance agencies, draw strong interest when the contracts are documented and the team is stable. The business services page explains how those are valued. Edward M. Polk Associates, an insurance agency, is one of the companies the firm has sold.

Questions owners in McAllen ask

Part of my McAllen company's revenue comes from customers in Mexico. Will buyers discount it?

Not if it is steady and well documented. Buyers look for several years of consistent sales, clean collections and a spread of customers. We separate domestic and cross-border revenue in the marketing package so buyers can see both clearly and price the company on its full record.

Can a McAllen health care practice or clinic be sold through MDR & Associates?

Our clients are profitable companies whose yearly revenue falls from around $3 million to $100 million. Health care practices raise licensing and ownership rules that your transaction attorney must address. We can discuss whether your practice fits and how buyers in that field usually structure a purchase.
